Founded in 1887 as Nicholson & Scammell by Francis George Scammell in Selborne Chambers on Pirie Street, Scammell & Co. has a rich history rooted in the heart of South Australia’s legal community.
In 1908, Francis Scammell merged his practice with Herbert Stanley Skipper, a solicitor based in Port Adelaide, marking the beginning of the firm's evolution. This partnership was soon joined by well-known solicitor Walter Ray, and the firm became known as Scammell, Skipper & Ray. The firm would later experience another transformation, becoming Hardy, Scammell & Skipper as it continued to grow.
Following Francis Scammell’s death in 1927 and Walter Ray’s departure in 1930 to become a magistrate, the firm underwent further changes that would shape its future. In 1924, Geoffrey Hollidge joined the firm and became a partner in 1930, resulting in the name Scammell, Skipper & Hollidge.
The legacy continued with the next generation, as Geoffrey’s son Graeme Hollidge joined in 1963. Graeme went on to become the firm’s managing partner and held that role until 2023. He continues to provide his expertise as a consultant, maintaining the strong tradition of client service and legal excellence that has defined the firm for over a century.
Today, Scammell & Co. is the second oldest law firm in South Australia and remains committed to delivering high-quality legal services to individuals and businesses across the state, honouring the vision and values established by its founding partners.
