Warning on negative consequences to court funding

by | May 16, 2019

Chief Justice Chris Kourakis has recently commented on the negative impacts potential funding cuts would have on the Youth Court SA.

Scammell & Co. Barrister and Senior Solicitor, Ursula Matson, who is at the coalface dealing with children and parents, agrees. “Any funding cuts will lead to slower court processes, with young defendants being held in custody for longer periods before they are presented to the Court for bail applications, and there will be even longer delays in having their matters finalised.” Cuts to operating budgets would also affect parents whose children have been removed from their care. Ms Matson explains “Parents will experience even greater delays having their child protection matters brought to trial and finalised. In those cases where removal of the children was not warranted and the children are returned to their parents, those children will, to their great emotional detriment, be denied a close and meaningful relationship with their parents while the Youth Court proceedings are underway over many months.”
